Obiano Won’t Interfere In APGA Primaries – Party Chieftains

National leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has exonerated himself from the primary elections of the party on the condition that all aspirants on the platform of APGA should go to the field and test their validity and popularity because there would no special nor anointed candidates.

The governor’s position on the party’s forthcoming primary elections was made known through some chieftains of APGA at the party’s secretariat, Awka, while speaking to journalists on the party’s level of preparedness for the 2019 general elections on Monday.

The state treasurer of the party, Honourable Tony Chukwuemeka Nwakile, said the state governor had no hand in the party’s primary elections, moreover, APGA has a procedure for conducting primary elections emphasizing that it was not the responsibility of the governor to conduct primaries for the aspirants.

Nwakile, however, posited that the constitution allowed every individual to vote and be voted for; that the party does not intend to contravene that portion of the constitution stressing that internal democracy works in APGA and that it was the duty of the party to be unbiased as whoever the voters elect automatically becomes the candidate of the people.

On his part, a member of the state working committee of APGA in Anambra State and former council chairman of Orumba South Local Government Area, Owelle Godson Obi, was of the opinion that a number of variables may be considered for the primaries but, according to him, all the aspirants would be involved in the entire process to avoid what he termed nepotism tendencies.

Although the former council chairman maintained that it was not out of place for the state governor who is the national leader of the party to be abreast of developments in the party.

He said that the state governor, the national working committee as well as the state working committee of APGA have unanimously taken a firm decision not to interfere with the conduct of the primary elections.
