State government has apprehended one Mr. Obinna Okechukwu for allegedly diverting government funds into his private pocket.

Mr. Obinna Okechukwu who is the Chairman New Motorcycle Spare Parts Nnewi was said to have been the government revenue agent for the market but printed his own receipt instead of using government approved receipt, thereby diverting some of the money.

Amaka Chibuzor Okoye who witnessed the arrest reports that while handing over Mr. Okechukwu to the men of Department for State Services the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce, Markets and Wealth Creation, Dr. Christian Mmadubuko, said that information has been filtering to the Ministry that Mr. Okechukwu has been dubiously collecting illegal revenue on behalf of government, issuing fake receipt without remitting the money into government coffers.

Dr. Mmadubuko stated that Mr. Okechukwu claimed that he has paid in ten million naira into government account and still have about seven million naira and admitted that he stopped other members of the Market Executive from being involved in revenue collection with a promise to settle them with the money generated and stated that full investigate will be carried out by security agencies to help expose those who divert government funds.

The Commissioner warned revenue agents to know that government will not tolerate sharp practices, rather they should remit to government coffers what they collected and disclosed that they have prosecuted about ten market leaders and recovered all diverted money back into the government coffers.

Narrating his side of the story, Mr. Okechukwu said he has been using the receipt to collect tax which every other market in Nnewi is using, alleging that a particular informant fabricated the story which led to his arrest as he has paid ten million naira within three months in office.
