Today Is World No Tobacco Day


World No Tobacco Day is a day set aside by the World Health Organization to sensitise the general public on the dangers of tobacco intake.

The World No Tobacco Day was created by the member States of the World Health Organization in 1987 and it is being observed around the world on the thirty first of May every year.

The day is intended to encourage a twenty four hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption and equally draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and its negative health effects.

According to statistics, tobacco intake which currently leads to nearly six million deaths yearly, globally, including six hundred thousand as a result of non smokers being exposed to second hand smoke.

The day however has been met with both enthusiasm and resistance around the world from governments, public health organizations, smokers, growers and the tobacco industry.

According to research, Serbia has the highest number of tobacco in take around the world, followed by Bulgaria, Greece, Russia and Moldova.

Speaking to the Abs on the importance of the day, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike, noted that the Day affords both the government, health institutions and all other relevant stakeholders the opportunity to sensitize and educate both the tobacco consumers and the general public on the dangers of tobacco as well as its negative health effects, adding that some tobacco have the tendency of addiction.

On why some people consume tobacco with all its negative health implications, a cigarette smoker who preferred to be anonymous said it helps calm his nerves each time he is annoyed as well as whenever he needs to warm his temperature and made it clear that he is aware of the health implications but was not disturbed.

The main chemical in tobacco is nicotine which is a stimulant drug, that speeds up the messages traveling between the brain and body and it maybe more addictive than heroin.

The theme of this year's World no Tobacco day is "Tobacco and Heart Diseases".
