St. John Of God Sec. School Awka Wins Quiz Competition


The Anambra State Post Primary Schools Service Commission (PPSSC) has commended the Nigeria society of Engineers Awka branch for reaching out to the students in core subjects in the school curriculum.

The chairman of PPSSC Lady Joy Ulasi gave the commendation during the final phase of the mathematics and science quiz competition organized by the Nigeria Society of Engineers at the PPSSC Headquarters in Awka.

The final phase of the mathematics and science quiz competition for the junior category had in attendance Girls Secondary school Amaenyi Awka, Saint John of God Secondary School Awka, Ideh Secondary School, Enugwu Ukwu, Comprehensive Secondary School Nawfia and Community secondary school Amansea, while those who participated in the senior category were Comprehensive Secondary School Nawfia, Igwebuike Grammar school Awka, Girls secondary school Amaenyi Awka, Eziawka Community secondary school Awka and Saint John of God Secondary school Awka.

 The students were at their very best tackling questions from mathematics and science related subjects in the school curriculum.

Addressing the students, Lady Ulasi, who regretted the phobia of students who shy away from mathematics, said that there is no science course in the university without mathematics and acknowledged that such competition will help create massive awareness among the students.

The PPSSC Boss charged the students to study hard to achieve their dreams as mathematics is the easiest of all subjects and said that the commission bared the use of cell phones in all the government schools, calling on the well to do citizens and associations in the state to emulate the contributions of the Nigeria Society of Engineers.

 For the Chairman, Nigeria Society of Engineers Awka branch, Engr. Edmond Nkalu the journey has been revealing, as the performance of the students are generally above fifty percentage but expressed concern with the low performance by schools in rural communities and called for urgent upgrading of rural school system to bring them at par with their counterparts across the state.

While appreciating the association, the Secretary of PPSSC, Mrs. Josephine Onuorah and Engineer Fimbarr Ajegwu noted that the competition has stimulated students interest in mathematics, which she noted will help them to excel in science subjects and called on parents to contribute their quota by ensuring that children develop more interest in mathematics.

At the end of the final phase of the competition for the junior category, St. John of God Secondary School Awka came first, Community Secondary School Amansea clinched the second position and Ideh Secondary School Enugwu Ukwu got third position in the senior category, while in the junior category, St. John of God retained 1st position, Igwebuike Grammar school took the second place and Comprehensive Secondary school Nawfia clinched third.

Presentation of gifts to all the participated schools, cash prices to the winning schools as well group photographs were the high points of the event.
