Child Labour And Trafficking: Anambra Sets Up Steering Committee To Enforce Ban


The Commissioner for Social Welfare, Children and Women Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mezue says creating conducive atmosphere for education, and protection of children in the state is of utmost important to the present administration.

Mrs Mezue stated this in her 2018 Children’s Day message at Professor Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Center Awka.

The 2018 Children's day has its theme as "creating safe space for our children, is our collective responsibility".
The Commissioner said the state is implementing all concerning the theme as she has set up a steering committee that will monitor the compliance and enforce ban on child labour and trafficking

She disclosed that upbringing of children is a collective responsibility, adding that children must be monitored, to know their peer group even as she frowned at some parents who leave their children in the hands of teachers, caregivers and house helps, reminding them that children are special gifts and must be nurtured for brighter future.

Mrs Mezue revealed that a warning have gone to proprietors of children's home both government and privately owned to ensure conducive environment of the homes for the health of the children, stating that henceforth those using children for arms will be prosecuted.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Azuka Ofomata said that the state has put in many structures in place among which is shelter workshop at Abagana to care for children in conflict with the law as well as family courts.

Dr Ofomata pointed out that the Ministry also has a reformatory center for caring for those that have emotional instability.
