Igwe Calls For The Sustenance Of Sports In Anambra Schools


School Inter House Sport is designed to be an avenue for discovering and developing various sporting skills in students, as well as training them to be physically fit and healthy.

Based on the above fact, the management, staff and students of St. John of God Secondary School, Awka held the School Inter-house sports event yesterday.

Among the special guests, was Mr Emeka Igwe the humble, intelligent and smart young philanthropist , who graced the occasion because it provided an avenue to identify with aspiring young minds.

Mr Igwe, who appreciated the long historic achievements the school has attained, called on the school management to maintain the status quo of excelling in all its activities.

He made the remark, when he was called upon to lead the cutting of the institution’s cake.

He was accompanied by the School Principal, Mrs. Anthonia Nwanakie, the Manager of the School, Rev. Fr. Chigozie Jidere and other dignitaries.

Igwe, who had undertaken many initiatives that have improved the lives of the common man, used the occasion to make pledges to the course of improving excellence in the school.

He made huge donation to the participating houses that emerged first, second and third positions.

He also extended his magnanimity by also donating to those students from the school with disability.

The inter-house sports which before now was not done annually received a boast and cheers from the crowd when the young philanthropist announced that henceforth the sporting event will be a yearly one.

Emeka Igwe believes that Sport is part of education and should be encouraged at all level, therefore he promised to make available educational materials to the great institution.

It was evident at the event that Emeka Igwe has a lot going for him, as he enjoys a huge acceptance among the people for his tireless philanthropy. He has done so much for the people in his community but more importantly, he has done more in assisting the youth and this is presently counting in his favour.

He is one successful man whom many would want to work and identify with, not particularly because of what he has accomplished but because there is always something to learn when one meets with him.

In the same vein, Mrs Ify Enekwechi , SSA to the Governor on Special Education, acknowledged the vital role sports is playing in our society and most especially among youths. She also supported the school management by donating to the course.

The occasion also had many other dignitaries present and these include, in no particular order; Rev. Fr. Sebastian Onuora, Education Secretary, Awka Diocese; Rev. Fr. Adolphus Chukwuka, Education Secretary, Awka Region; Dr Ifeanyi Mulumba Ike, Chairman of the occasion; HRH, Dr Gibson Nwosu, Obi of Awka; Most Rev. Paulinus C. Ezeokafor, Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese; Hon. Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha; Hon. Commissioner for Youth, Entrepreneurship and Sport Development, Barr. (Dr) Mrs Uju Nwogu; The Chairman, PPSSC, Awka, Lady Joy Ulazi; The Chairman ASUBEB, Awka, Nze Emeka Olisa; amongst others.

Parents and guidance were not left out and old girls of the great institution were well represented.

There was match past from the 7 houses with other sporting activities, which include; 100m - Junior/Senior, 4 × 100m relay - Junior/Senior, Sumo race, Sack race, Blind race, Staff children's race, Old girls race, and many more.

Prizes were also won at the end of the day.
