Why South East Governors Proscribed IPOB Activities - Obiano

Governor Willie Obiano says he remains deeply committed to sustaining the peace and security Ndi Anambra have enjoyed since his administration came on board.

Governor Obiano was speaking at Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Center, Awka during an emergency Townhall meeting he held with major stakeholders in the state.

The meeting attracted traditional rulers and Presidents-General of Communities in the State, religious leaders as well as opinion influencer.

Governor Obiano used the event to brief the people on the outcome of recent Southeast Governors Forum meeting held at Enugu after which he fielded questions from the gathering on the communique issued by the Governors and the Operation Python Dance by the Nigerian Army.

The Governor who explained that events of recent times prompted the decision by the Governors to proscribe all activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, said it is wanton folly to lead harmless youths into the streets to be killed by heavily armed military personnel.

He noted that the Southeast Governors Forum is championing the cause for restructuring of the country, adding that at their behest, several meetings have been held to discuss and articulate what is required in the restructuring process.

Governor Obiano debunked insinuations that the Operation Python Dance is targeted at annihilating Ndigbo, and asserted that it is a routine military operation and not a permanent one, recalling that last year, the Operation helped the state beef up its security drive especially during Christmas.

He appealed to the stakeholders to take the message down to the grassroot to inform their wards who are involved in the agitations to desist henceforth so as to safeguard their lives.

The Chairman, State Traditional Rulers Council and traditional ruler of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe advocated the reproduction and distribution of the communique to the public to adequately sensitize them on the need to stay safe in this period.

In a vote of thanks, the Chairman, Willie Obiano Re-election Campaign Committee, Chief Victor Umeh commended Governor Obiano for his tact in managing the IPOB situation in the State but called on the Federal Government to be even-handed in its actions, since according to him, most of the agitations are as a result of marginalization of the zone over time.
