The prime purpose of the International Day of Charity is to raise awareness and provide a common platform for charity related activities all over the world for individuals , charitable, philanthropics and volunteer organizations for their own purposes on the local, national , regional and international levels.

September five was chosen for the day in order to commemorate the anniversary of the passing away of mother Theresa of Calculta who received the Nobel Prize in 1979 for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress which constitute a threat to peace.

Commenting on the Day , a care- giver, Mrs. Imelda Onyebuchukwu called on privileged individuals to identify with the plight of the poor and down trodden to ameliorate their difficulties and reduce the burden of crime and criminality in the society .

Mrs. Onyebuchukwu called for scholarship programmes to university level for all inmates of motherless Babies Homes to encourage them to attain their full potential in life.
