INEC Tasked On Logistics For Credible Guber Election In Anambra

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has been charged to put adequate and concrete logistics in place for free, fair and credible governorship election in the state.

Guests on ABS phone in programme, "ISSUES" made the call when they aired their views on the agenda setting role of political parties and politicians.

According to the guests, political parties have a role to deepen internal democracy in their various parties by conducting transparent party primaries while the electorate have to play politics based on their conscience and not money.

Looking at the just-concluded party primaries, the guests who included the Director, Business School, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Austin Nnoyelu, and the HOD Geography and Meteorology, Dr. Emma Ezenwaji, were of the view that the recent primaries conducted by some of the major political parties in the state were largely transparent, free from rancour, violence and monetary inducement, as seen some years past.

On the role of INEC in deepening democracy, Dr. Ezenwaji, who was a former Director of Logistics, and the Executive Secretary, ANSIEC, emphasized that INEC must put proper arrangements and logistics in place and not use fire brigade approach which might jeopardize the election by recruiting their ad-hoc staff under proper and tight screening, in order not to recruit people who will be tools in the hands of politicians.

On the issue of money politics, the guests agreed that running an election in a developing and capitalist economy like Nigeria is always capital intensive, even though the country is evolving, but cautioned people not to sell their conscience to elect a leader for money, but to elect those who will give them dividends of democracy with their vote.

Some callers to the programme, Pastor Thankgod from Ndiowu and Honourable Austin from Nnewi-South, thanked the government for putting adequate security in place for successful primaries by political parties.
