Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam have joined the nationwide strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU.

Correspondent Nneka Anoliefo visited the universities to monitor compliance with the nationwide strike action and reports that it is a matter of no teaching, no grading of papers, no supervision at any level, no meeting whether departmental ,faculty, senate and council among others while the strike lasts in the two universities visited.

Professor Dennis Aribodor who is the ASUU Chairperson, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, explained that ASUU is fighting for the betterment of educational system in Nigeria.

He recalled that ASUU had to embark on a six month strike between July and December, 2013 and the strike was suspended when government signed an MoU with the Union, after a thirteen hours meeting with the then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Of all the items contained in the MoU , Professor Aribodor explained that two hundred billion naira out of the total of one trillion, three hundred billion naira of Public Universities Revitalization (Need Assessment) fund was released.

He also made it known that the union also embarked on one week strike in November 2016 to press for the implementation of the 2013 MoU, which government did not honour.

The Financial Secretary ASUU Task Force, UNIZIK Comrade Harrison Itaga who spoke on behalf of the ASUU Monitoring Committee, Professors and Lecturers among others , explained that the key outstanding issues include, payment of fractions/non-payment of salaries, non- payment of Earned Academic Allowances and Non release of the provisions of the 2014 Pension Reform Act with respect to retired Professors and their salaries among others.

When ABS arrived Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, the interim chairpersons Cynado Eze Ogidi and Comrade Emeka Nwabunnia explained the strike was total in the school.
