Anambra Govt Intensifies Fight Against Illiteracy, Calls For Promotion Of Reading Culture

Governor Willie Obiano has restated commitment towards the fight against illiteracy in the state.

Governor Obiano stated this at the first State Young Author’s Conference and inauguration of Anambra Young Author’s Association (AYAA) held at Professor Kenneth Dike E-Library, Awka.

Governor Obiano represented by the State Commissioner for Education, Professor Kate Omenugha, appreciated the efforts of the young authors and explained that his administration is passionate about learning and creativity .

He noted that his administration has introduced measures to improve reading culture in the state.
He encouraged them to embrace reading culture and shun patronizing internets for pornography as according to him pornographic films are quite destructive, advising them to emulate great authors like
Chukwuemeka Ike, Chimamanda Adiche and Late Professor Chinua Achebe among others.

In his opening speech, the traditional ruler of Igbakwu in Ayamelum Local Government Area, Igwe Professor Onuora Nwuneli admonished the young authors to create legacy as according to him “the legacy of Writers endures”.

In their separate speeches some of the participants, the traditional ruler of Umueje, Igwe E.U. Nneli and a lecturer Nwfaor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe, Dr Emmanuel Chukwurah encouraged the young Authors to explore their talents and promised them his continued support and called for the sustenance of the conference.

In his address, the President of the Association, Master Michael Ike explained that the major problem author’s encounter in the country is poor reading culture pointing out that the moment people begin to understand the value of books in one’s lives, it will mark the beginning of great development in the nation.

Presentation of Awards to patrons and patronesses and certificates to participants as well as debate by the young authors formed the highpoints of the event.
