Anglican Communion begins sensitisation of voters for Anambra governorship poll

Determined to ensure that the electorates in Anambra State perform their civic responsibilities by participating in electing their leaders, the Anglican Diocese on the Niger (Anglican Communion), has embarked on sensitization of eligible voters in the state, to participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter’s Registration, CVR, exercise, in order not to be disenfranchised.

The church is doing this through its non-governmental organization- the Directorate of Civic and Political Affairs, DCPA, led by Venerable Okey Ukpeke.

As part of the sensitisation exercise, members of DCPA on Thursday, marched through the major streets in Onitsha metropolis before retiring to the Onitsha North Local Government headquarters, where they delivered their letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Chairman, through the Electoral Office, with some demands to improve the exercise.

The sensitisation walk began from All Saints Cathedral Onitsha, through the Upper New Market road, New Market road, Old Market road, Court road, Old Enugu road and Hill Crescent to Onitsha North Council Headquarters, where they distributed different fliers and other awareness materials to the excited members of the public.

Director of DCPA, Venerable Ukpeke urged the people of the state to ensure they registered for the electoral process, especially, the forthcoming governorship election in the state. “We noticed that people are being short-circuited in the process of registration, so we want to create awareness so that INEC will live up to its duties, by making provision for all the necessary registration materials as well as making them accessible to people.

“We discovered that within the time lag of the registration, a good number of people do not have access to the registration materials, so we want to bring it to the notice of INEC officials and people out there, and also to sensitize and encourage people to go and register, because your vote is your franchise and power. “
