Anambra Guber: Ohaneze, ASATU Affirm Zoning

Speakers at the two day sixth Annual Anambra State Traditional Rulers Seminar said Anambra North senatorial district should be allowed to complete their second term in office to further strengthen the zoning system in the Anambra politics.

This was the highpoint of the speeches made during the flag off of the seminar holding at the Traditional rulers council hall, Government house Awka.

Delivering a good will message on behalf of Ohaneze Ndigbo , Anambra State Chapter, its chairman Chief Damian Okeke –Ogene, said that it behoves on the traditional institution to guide their subjects accordingly, as according to him, since Ndi Anambra have accepted zoning system, and have said clearly that Governor Obiano should be allowed to complete the second term for the Anambra North, there should be no controversy.

Contributing, the National President of ASATU, Mr Alex Onukwue, said that ASATU, and Ohaneze Ndigbo are solidly behind zoning, and will continue to support the traditional rulers, commending them for their unanimous support to zoning geared towards all inclusive democracy in the state.

On his part, the traditional ruler of Isiagu, Igwe Augustine Ozoemena, added that zoning formula will not only engender peaceful politicking, but will also reduce cost, and campaign of calumny, noting that Ndi Anambra cannot afford to joke with the security network already instituted in the state when they have the opportunity of sustaining it by voting in Governor Obiano for second term.

The Traditional ruler of Ifite-dunu, Igwe, Dr. Emeka Iluno who said that traditional rulers have a big role to play in ensuring that the zoning formula is sustained, cautioned them against speaking from both sides of the mouth, as according to him, it is high time Ndi Anambra made use of their own local constitution that is working for the good of the state.

Also, the traditional ruler of Umunya Igwe Chris Onyekwuluje, commended the traditional rulers for the annual seminar which he noted has exposed them to a lot of realities, and thanked Governor Obiano for doing wonderfully well in running the affairs of the state.

Earlier in a paper presentation, a guest speaker,  Barrister Nobis Elendu who spoke on the topic “Legal perspectives on political power zoning in a constitutional democracy" called on traditional rulers, leaders of thought and all stake holders to ensure that zoning is enshrined in their constitution saying that zoning will continue to suffer set back unless it is given a legal backing.

Barrister Elendu added that the Northerners have manipulated the system since the time of quota system, federal character and now zoning and maintained that the only solution to the zoning tussle in the nation's polity is inclusion of zoning in the constitution of federal republic of Nigeria so that no zone would have monopoly of power.
