Service To My People Is First Charge Obligation - Obiano

The Anambra state governor, Chief  Willie Obiano has appealed to the Federal Character Commission to fashion out a strategy to address what he saw as the gargantuan challenges that marginalization poses to his state-Anambra, in particular and the SouthEast geopolitical zone at large, in the allocation and sharing of Federal government's infrastructural projects, appointments and other national distributions.

The Governor tabled this when he hosted the Commission's delegation who paid courtesy visit to him at the Governor's Lodge Amawbia.

The delegation came to Anambra to inspect all ongoing projects of the Federal Government in the state.

In his brief remark, the Governor regretted the inadequate federal presence as well as the dilapidated state of federal government infrastructure in the state, noted that the Commission was established with laudable motives but over the years, it has been abused and its mandate totally forgotten.

Gov Obiano lamented that despite all his representations with the relevant Federal Ministries especially in the areas of Power, Roads and Public Utilities for increased federal presence, the State has not received any meaningful response, adding that if Ndi Anambra must have faith in the system, government at the center should show them a sense of belonging.

He informed the Commission that the Federal government is owing the State N43.9 billion, being money spent on Federal roads works by the state and that explains why some of the Federal Roads in the state are still in good shape. He called for the reimbursement of the sum to enable his administration undertake more projects.

He however observed that in Anambra, his administration is practicalizing even distribution of political appointments and infrastructural projects evident in its 20 million naira community development initiative and others programmes, he says"the  seevice to my people Ndi Anambra is my first charge obligation',adding that State is peaceful partly because virtually all its segments have been adequately included.

Earlier in his speech, the Leader of the delegation and Acting Executive Chairman of the Commission, Dr Bukar-Abba while commending Gov Obiano for his exemplary leadership style, said that if all political leaders in the country would emulate his passion for the welfare of the people, the country will be better for it.

He explained that initially the commission has focused on employment but this year, they were charged to look into the issue of infrastructural projects including Roads, Power, Water amongst others, across the country to ensure that budgetary provisions do not favor some states better than the others.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof Solo Chukwulobelu said the visit would be profitable as it will create opportunity for the state government to interact the commission towards addressing the anomaly.

In a vote of thanks, the Commissioner representing Anambra in the Commission, Mrs Gloria Idigo-Izundu commended governor Obiano for his openness in the state governance.

The Federal Character Commission is one of the 14 bodies established by the 1999 Constitution to ensure equity and fairness in the distribution of Federal government's Posts, appointments, social amenities and services as well as infrastructure.
