PRESS RELEASE: 25 Party Chairmen Support Obiano’s Transition Committee Appointment, Fault High Court Judgement

We must ensure that democracy does not only exist in Anambra State but rooted properly as it is obtainable in other clime where democracy has actually taken root.

This above statement was made by Prince Batho Igwedibia, JP, Chairman of all the political parties in Anambra state, during a press briefing today, organized to brief the public over the recent judicial judgement on 18th May 2017, pertaining to Local Government Election.

Emerging from a closed door meeting, the body of political parties in Anambra State, while addressing the press, made the following assertion;

The judgement on the conduct of the Local Government election in Anambra State delivered by Honourable Justice Victor Umeadi of anambra state high court.

Judgement case number A/182/2016, brought by All Progressive Congress, APC and 21 others vs Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC and 28 others on the 18th May 2017.

The leaders of political parties in Anambra state as much as we welcome the landmark judgment, we are however, utterly political concern with the quagmire in the judgment that didn’t take into consideration the constitutional right of about 40 registered political parties in Anambra State.

The Chief Judge of Anambra State, in the said judgement did not only deprive all other political parties that were not parties in the suit there constitutional right to participate in the said election that is to be conducted in accordance to the judgement of the court which held that it only the All progress Congress, APC, that is qualified to take part in the said election.

The said judgement had not only deprive all other political parties in Anambra State their right to be heard but also has imposed a judgement on them even when they are not parties in the suit. And it is now obvious that the court should not have given such a bogus judgement without all other political parties been opportune for fair hearing.

A careful consideration of the judgement will show the face of a bias chief judge who is out for mischief under the guise of judgment without slightest sensitivity to the due process of the law.
To this effect, the underlisted political parties in Anambra here present, after a careful study of  the judgement, which to state to the general public as follows;

1. That the right of other political parties in the state and it is an equivalent to a rape of judicial system/ process, to the detriment of the citizen as well as their political parties which is capable of generating anarchy and pandemonium in the local government election process in Anambra State.

2. That the honourable Chief Judge in his judgement has shut out  all registered political parties in Anambra State when he held talk in view of my findings and facts that only APC nominated candidate for the 2015 Anambra State Local Government election and all other parties fail to do so. ANSIEC should give a notice of election and conduct election for the nominated candidate and conduct within 90 days from today, May 18th 2017.

3. That the leaders of political parties in Anambra State having been conversant with the election law/processes is aware that the anambra state independent electoral commission, ANSIEC, by the provision of the law ,never gave any guideline for the conduct of the Local Government election in the state from January 2015 till date. And no time table was released by the ANSIEC as postulated by his Lordship, the chief judge and couldn’t have found as he did above, as there was never a time such a thing happened. We are very much aware that the government of Chief Willie Obiano is making arrangement to conduct Local Government Election soonest.

Sequel to the above, we stand fully in support of Anambra State government by appointment of transition committee pending when ANSIEC is ready with their preparation for Local Government Election.

Thank You and God bless you”.

Fielding questions from the press, Prince Batho Igwedibia, who is also the party chairman of Accord, stated that he hold no brief for the government of Anambra State nor for APGA and that it is common knowledge that Local Government Council poll is supposedly conducted by ANSIEC but right now ANSIEC is yet to be fully constituted.

Party Chairmen
Backing their claims for supporting the government of Willie Obiano over the appointment of the Transition Committee, Prince Igwedibia, speaking for the 25 political parties present further reveal that the ANSIEC board is before the State House of Assembly and therefore there should be no vacuum in the government system.

In the same vein, All Grassroot Alliance State Party Chairman,   Comr Uzoekene Konwu, called the high court judgement a kangaroo judgement. In his word, “the judgement we had is a judgement that has lot of clauses that is not acceptable to my party. The issue of having the election just for one party is ridiculous, it is unbelievable and I don’t think it is backed up by constitution”.

Comr. Uzoekene, AGA state party chairman

Comr Uzoekene who said he can't stand by and watch his party disenfranchised and excluded, has vowed to make it a point of duty to have his party participate in the election and will resist all attempt to sideline his party from the election.

He called on INEC to live up to its expectation.
