Anambra State Government Clears More Water Channels As Rain Sets In

The ongoing evacuation of filth and disilting of drainages in major streets in Onitsha is in top gear.

A visit to Oguta road, Old market road and Ugwunakpankpa indicated a massive evacuation and disilting exercise as tippers, pay loaders; excavator van and casual workers were seen busy excavating refuse, while pay loaders and tippers were also evacuating the debris generated to final disposal sites.

Casual workers were also at hand clearing the remnants of the refuse on the roads and streets.
Speaking to the ABS in an interview, the contractor handling the project who is also a former Chairman, Onitsha North Local Government Area, Barrister Douglas Egbuna, said the exercise was in line with the state Governor's directive to ensure that all flood channels are opened up for free flow of flood especially now that the rainy season is here.

He made it clear that they would not relent as the exercise was going on in virtually all the major streets that needed such attention.

The former local government boss noted some of their challenges to include long distance to final disposal sites and gridlock on the roads which delay evacuation, but expressed hope to deliver soon.

Also speaking, the supervisor, Mr Marthin Obika, hinted their efforts to ensure they meet up with the vision of the Governor toward providing a cleaner and healthy environment in Onitsha metropolis.

Some passersby who expressed their feelings,   Messrs Ekene Ani, and Uchechukwu Okorie, as well as Mrs Ifeoma Ede ,thanked the Governor for mobilizing his men to assist in clearing the drainages which usually posed serious danger to them during raining season.

They also applauded the contractor for his diligence in ensuring that the dumps and drainages are cleared in the shortest possible time.
